Records fall at Old York Country Club as
three players make runs up the leaderboard
Chesterfield, N.J. —July
30, 2010 - After sharing the Boys Division
lead for two straight rounds, Greg
Bunner of Cherryville, N.C., was
crowned the champion at the 42nd Trusted
Choice® Big “I” National Championship with a
final round 71 and one-under-par 283
tournament total. New Jersey native Kuriko
Tsukiyama of Bogota finished the tournament
at 2-over-par 290 to claim the Girls
Division title after holding the lead all
four rounds. Corey McElyea of Santa Cruz,
Calif., and Will Bishop of Lexington, Ky.,
shot final round 65s while Elise Bradley of
Mandeville, La., carded a final round 67.
The three juniors wrote new men’s and
women’s single round records at Old York
Country Club at Chesterfield.
Bunner
averaged four birdies per round en route to
the biggest victory of his junior career.
Consistent strong putting throughout the
week led the eighteen-year-old to win in his last junior golf
appearance, as he heads off to Western
Carolina University in the fall. With
McElyea and Bishop in the clubhouse tied at
even-par 284, eighteen-year-old Bunner two
putted from 20 feet for par to seal the
victory. |
“I had no clue that they were
that close,” Bunner said after the round. “I
thought I had a two to three stroke cushion.
I was just trying to put a good line on it
with good speed. It’s nice to have my name
in the same list as Tiger Woods.”
Tied after their
course-breaking rounds of 65, McElyea and
Bishop took home second-place trophies.
Standing alone in fourth at 2-over-par 286
was Sean Friel of Rochester Hills, Mich.
Caleb Sturgeon of Laurens, S.C., Daniel
Pizetoski of Davidson, N.C., and Mark Reilly
of Babylon, N.Y., finished tied for fifth at
7-over-par 291.
In the Girls Division,
14-year-old Kuriko Tsukiyama shot a
final-round 2-over-par 74 to claim the
champion’s title. After a shaky 5-over-par
third-round 77, Tsukiyama
concentrated on chipping and putting while
warming up for the final round.
“It’s my first big victory,”
Tsukiyama said. “I’m really excited right
now. All I wanted to do was concentrate on
my own game and not worry about what other
people were shooting.”
Finishing second at
9-over-par 297 was Ally McDonald of Fulton,
Mich., followed by Ashlee Pickerell of
Salem, Ore., who shot an 11-over-par 299 for
the tournament. |

Place Finisher Daniel Pizetoski
Somewhere on the Atlantic Sea Board – July
30, 2010 – It was around 10PM Friday night on a highway
heading home from the Big “I” we made
contact with Daniel Pizetoski for some
comments on his experience at the Big “I”.
We did not keep him long as he was tired and
wanted to sleep but he did say, “ that the
greens were really difficult. They had very
subtle breaks in them and the speeds made
putting very difficult but despite that I
really liked the course and the challenge.
My goal each day was just to play it safe
and try to stay around par. I was very happy
about my 5th place finish
considering the greens.”Sleep
tight Daniel you deserve a good rest for
your performance at the Big “I”. |

THREE
73'S DOMINATE TOP TWO SR. TOUR FLIGHTS AT
THE NATIONAL GC
Pinehurst, NC (July 29, 2010)
- You
would expect that a 1-over 73 would be
turned in by one or more of the
Championship Flight players at The
National Golf Club in Pinehurst during
today's Senior Amateur Golf Tour event.
However, you might not expect that one of
those 73s came from an A Flight player
hitting from the same tees as the "big
boys". However, that's exactly what
Creedmoor's Cecil Lockley did to come away
with a 1-stroke victory over Lewisville's
Mike Smith. Lockley, who has competed in 25 events
this season on both the Raleigh and
Charlotte Tours, is no stranger to the
winner's circle, having notched a number
of Tour wins in the past. His 73 today
however, was the lowest score he has
posted during those 25 events he's played
this year.
In the Championship Flight two members
also posted 73s and consequently had to
return to the course to decide the top
spot in a sudden death playoff. Long
hitting Craig Sturdivant of Sanford was
the benificiary of starting the playoff
against Lawrence Hicks of Greensboro on
the relatively short 454 yard par 5, 10th
hole. With his length, Sturdivant was
able to reach the green in 2 with a
7-iron. His 2-putt birdie was just enough
to secure the win.
David Frye of Winston-Salem was the only B
Flight member to break 80 with a 78 and a
3-stroke victory over a trio of golfers.
Gary Niland of Mount Airy was one of only
4 players in the C Flight to break 90, as
his 87 gave him a one stroke win over
Raleigh's Darrell Hagwood.

Dear USGA,
What a fine mess you’ve got us into.
On paper, this new groove rule might

is driving players and rules
officials to the brink of golf
insanity.
The latest incident involved
