Oak Valley
Victory Makes Paul Simson the Owner of the
Most CGA Championships Ever |
|
|
|
|
ADVANCE, NC - May 17, 2012 - Final round results of the 27th
North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association
hosted by Oak Valley Golf Club in Advance, NC on Thursday, May 17, 2012 (6596
yards, par 36-36—72, 71.6/132).
Paul
Simson of Raleigh, NC has won many titles in his storied golf career but he
earned a new one today, “Most All-Time CGA Championships”.
Simson’s birdie on the second playoff hole defeated Jim Grainger of Charlotte,
NC to seal his 25th CGA championship title which surpasses Dale
Morey’s long-standing record of 24. Simson now holds six North Carolina Senior
Amateur Championship crowns (2006, ‘07, ‘09, ‘10, ‘11, ‘12).
“This
one is special,” a choked-up Simson said. “Dale Morey has 24 of these titles but
now I have 25. I wanted to win this one because if I didn’t the pressure (to win
number 25) would have start building.”
Simson
and Grainger pulled away from the 123-player field by each posting a seven-under
par 136 that was four |
strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
Grainger has proven to be a worthy competitor to Simson at most CGA senior events
since he turned 55-years-old last year. “What can I say…he is the best senior
amateur golfer in the world,” Grainger said of Simson following the playoff
loss.
Due
to the five-plus inches of rain that fell in the Advance, NC area from Sunday
night through Tuesday, the championship format was shortened to 36 holes.
Oak
Valley Golf Course played as par 71 for round one but was reverted back to the
traditional par 72 for the final round. The 360-yard par four 10th
hole was converted to a par 3 for round one due to unplayable wet fairway
conditions.
The
top 30 players and ties are exempt for the 2013 North Carolina Senior Amateur
Championship. -

Charleston's
Katie Higgins Wins 86th Women's Carolinas
Amateur Championship Charlotte's Patty
Moore Captures her 9th WCGA Senior Trophy |
|
|
HANAHAN,
SC --- May 167, 2012 - Final results of the
86th Women's Carolinas Amateur Championship
hosted by Yeamans Hall Club on Thursday, May 17,
2012. Par 36-36--72 5,922 yards.
After a
four hour and ten minute suspension of play due
to lightening in the area Katie Rose Higgins of
Charleston, SC captured the 86th Women's
Carolinas Amateur Championship by one stroke
over 17-year-local Katelyn Dambaugh of Goose
Creek, SC. Most players had only three to four
holes to finish before play was suspended due to
dangerous weather in the area. All flights with
the exception of the championship flight were
shortened to 36 holes. |
"Even
though we had a long delay, I was glad to
finish," Higgins said. "It's always nice to win
a championship without an asterisk next to the
score.
I was able
to stay focused on my own game all throughout
the day and I kept sticking to my plan."
Dambaugh's tough and competitive nature would
not give up though. She was always lurking
around and fighting her way back to try and take
the lead away from Higgins. Dambaugh headed
into the 18th hole two behind Katie Rose
Higgins. Dambaugh would reach the
|
the par 5
18th in two for a chance at eagle but missed.
Higgins made her two putt for par to win by one
stroke. "This is a special championship
with a long
history and I'm glad to have my name on the
trophy along with so many other wonderful
champions."
In the
Carolinas Tee division Carole Jones of
Hillsborough, NC won the overall Super Senior
trophy and had the overall low score of the
division. This division plays a shorter course
and was shortened to 36 holes due to dangerous
weather in the area.
In the
senior division, Patty Moore of Charlotte, NC
won her 9th WCGA Senior trophy over Angela
Stewart of Greenville, NC by one stroke. -

Malnati Takes 36-Hole Lead at Willow Creek
Hometown Favorite Weaver Sits Alone in Second |
|
|
High Point, NC –
On his first hole of the second
round of the eGolf Tour’s Willow Creek Open,
Peter Malnati of Dandridge, TN laced a perfect
3-wood tee shot that bounded through the
dogleg-right fairway and nestled into one of the
many tree roots that line the classic Willard
Byrd-designed course. With his ball sitting in a
virtual hole of sunken tree root, Malnati did
his best to “top the ball 12 yards from where it
laid,” and from there hit a perfect 8-iron to 1
foot to save par. That early drama set up a
second-round 67 for the former Missouri
standout, who will now take a one-shot lead into
Friday’s final round of the 54-hole event.
The
Willow Creek Open is the ninth of |
24 scheduled events on the
2012 eGolf Tour schedule, and is being contested
this week at Willow Creek Country Club in High
Point, NC. The event is the third of 10
scheduled 54-hole events on the tour’s 2012
schedule.
Malnati began his second round in
a tie for second place and trailing overnight
leader Matt Hill after a first-round 65 on
Wednesday. His opening hole impression of the
great Seve Ballesteros gave way to birdies on
Nos. 4, 6 and 8 to give Malnati a 3-under 33 on
his outward nine, which in turn pushed him to
10-under for the week.

Braves
Finish 10th At NCAA Championships, Break
PBC Record |
|
|
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. –
Michael Mullman tallied six
birdies en route to a 1-under-par 71 and
Jordan Walor carded a
1-over-par 73, but fourth-ranked UNCP
was unable to find its way back among
the top eight teams and finished their
stay at the NCAA Championships with a
10th place finish on Thursday. Walor
(-2) exited the three-round tournament
at 2-under-par and settled for a 14th
place finish despite turning in
below-par scores in each of the first
two rounds of the event. Mullman (+5)
turned in his best score of the
tournament en route to finishing in a
tie for 39th place, while
Carson Lanier (+6)
concluded the event in a tie for 46th
after carding a 3-over-par 75 on
Thursday. Seniors
Jonathan McCurry (+11) and
Scott Lambert shot 76 and
77, respectively, in the final round of
stoke play and shared 71st place on the
final |
individual leaderboard. UNCP (+15)
booked its second-best round of the week
and came off the course in a tie for
12th, but jumped up two spots as the
rest of the field battled extremely
windy conditions at the University of
Louisville's Cardinal Club as well. The
short trek up the leaderboard was not
enough, though, as the Black & Gold
finished six strokes off of Central
Missouri who grabbed the eighth and
final spot heading into Friday's match
play quarterfinal round.
Seventh-ranked Chico State (-13) will
head into match play as the top seed and
will take on eighth-seeded Central
Missouri (+9) in Friday's match play
quarterfinals. Other matchups on Friday
will include top-ranked Nova
Southeastern (-9) against 14th-ranked
USC Aiken (+6), 13th-ranked Central
Oklahoma (-8) against second-ranked
|
Barry (+2) and third-ranked CSU-Stanislaus
(-6) against 18th-ranked Georgia College
(-2). The Braves, who finished third
or better in 10 of the 12 events they
competed in this season, also set a new
Peach Belt Conference single season
record by concluding their 2011-12
campaign with a 288.84 stroke average.
That number breaks a two-year old league
record set by Georgia College who
registered a 289.77 stroke average
during the 2009-10 campaign.
Walor, who ranks second in PBC
history with eight career victories,
concluded his senior campaign with a
school record 71.39 stroke average – the
third-best average in league annals, and
the lowest since Clayton State's Will
Wilcox posted a PBC record 71.06 stroke
average during the 2008-09 season. -

Duke in 11th at NCAA East Regional Sumrall
& Paolini Post One-Over 73s |
|
|
GREENSBORO,
N.C. –
The Duke men’s golf team,
ranked 18th in the
latest Golf World / Nike Golf
Coaches’ Poll, is 11th
after one round of play after
shooting a 13-over 301 in the
opening round of the NCAA
East Regional at the
Grandover Resort East Course
(par 72, 7,271 yards). Junior
Adam Sumrall and
Brinson Paolini paced the
Blue Devils with one-over 73s
on Thursday.
“You don’t
want to dig yourself a hole
to get out of but these guys
know how to climb,” said head
coach Jamie Green.
“They have done it before,
they did it at regionals at
Notre Dame in 2010, and what
I told them after the round
was how much I believe in
them and how much I know they
believe in themselves.
Everybody has something
unique that if they could
step back and do over again
they would but what’s past is
past. These guys have already
regrouped and gotten
themselves ready for
tomorrow. There is no time
for looking back, so we are
going to use the time we have
to do what has to be done to
move forward.”
Liberty posted
the only under-par team round
on the day and holds the
first round lead with a
five-under 283. SMU is five
shots back at even-par with
Tulsa (+5, 293), UNLV (+5,
293) and Texas Tech (+6, 294)
rounding out the top five.
Duke enters tomorrow’s second
round seven shots out of
fifth place. The top five
teams after 54 holes |
of play advance to
the NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club in
Pacific Palisades, Calif.
SMU’s Matt Schovee
holds the individual lead after firing a five-under
67. He holds a two-shot lead over teammate Harry Higgs
and John Young Kim of Tulsa. Sumrall and Paolini are
tied for 15th at one-over after 18 holes of
play.
With Duke starting
the day on the back nine, Sumrall opened up with
back-to-back pars before going through a
birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey stretch. He finished off the
back nine with three more pars to make the turn at
even-par. The South Bend, Ind., native suffered a
bogey on No. 1 but quickly recovered with a birdie on
the par 5 second hole. Sumrall parred the next six
holes, narrowly missing birdie putts on No. 7 and No.
8, before closing with a bogey on the par 4 ninth
hole.
Paolini carded a birdie on No. 10 to
start the tournament but dropped back to even-par with
a bogey on No. 11. The Virginia Beach, Va., native
birdied the par 3 12th hole before again
suffering a bogey on the very next hole. He closed off
the back nine with five straight pars to make the turn
at even-par. Paolini added a birdie on the par 5
second hole to move back to one-under but carded three
bogeys over the next four holes to slip to +2. He
bounced back to finish par-birdie-par for a one-over
73. |
Senior Spencer
Anderson also played the back nine at even-par
with five pars, two birdies (No. 12 & No. 18) and two
bogeys on holes No. 10-18. Anderson nearly carded an
ace on the par 3 12th hole as he tee shot
settled less than a foot from the cup. After the turn
he tacked on six more pars but also suffered two
bogeys and a double-bogey en route to a four-over 76.
He enters tomorrow’s second round tied for 39th.
Junior Julian
Suri suffered his worst round of the season
while nursing a wrist injury throughout the opening
round. The St. Augustine, Fla., native finished
with a seven-over 79 and was penalized by three tee
balls that went out of play and resulted in a pair
of double-bogeys and a triple-bogey. Suri closed the
day with 13 pars despite struggling off the tee box
throughout the round.
Austin Cody,
a sophomore from North Charleston, S.C., also posted
a seven-over 79 in the opening round. He and Suri
are tied for 60th overall. Cody had 11
pars and seven bogeys on the day and was plagued by
a cold putter on Thursday.
Duke opens
second round play on Friday at 8:50 a.m. off No. 10
at the Grandover Resort East Course. The Blue Devils
will be paired with Florida and Charlotte. Live

|
ATHENS, Ga. – The Wake Forest

Club on Thursday with a round of even-par 284 and sits in eighth place after
round one.
The Deacons had a bit of an up and down day. They got off to a
slow start and were 4-over par at one point. But eight birdies in a six-hole
span lifted the Deacs to 4-under par and into fourth place early in the back
nine. However, a tough finish left Wake with a round of even-par 284.

For Beck, it was just his second under-par round of
the spring.
Senior Lee Bedford had an up and down
day as well. He made a total of four birdies on the
day but finished with a double-bogey six on No. 18
to post an even-par round of 71. Bedford is

Charlotte 49ers Grind Out NCAA
Regional First Round
Performance |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
After struggling at the start, the Charlotte 49ers found
themselves grinding out a first round performance at the NCAA Greensboro
Regional to stay within striking distance for Friday's second round.
Charlotte finished round one at 15-over par, 20 strokes out of
first place and nine strokes out of the top five that will advance past round
three into the 30-team NCAA Championships.
But it could have been very different.
"We got off to a slow start but we hung in there and battled
back," said 49ers first-year head coach Ryan Cabbage."We were 13-over after six
holes and did some good things in the |
middle part of the round, the late
part of the round. As I told the guys, 'we didn't
play our best today but we didn't play ourselves out
of it." Seniors Olafur
Loftsson, Rafael Guerrero and Tyler Mitchell all
shot even par on the second nine as Charlotte
battled to remain in contention. The 49ers are just
five strokes back of ninth-place Indiana and will be
paired with 10th-place Florida (+11) and 11th-place
Duke (+13) in round two.
Guerrero, for instance was six-over
par after the first four holes, but played the final
14 in one-under par to finish at +5, 77. Mitchell
was five-over through the first five holes and
played even-par over the final 13 to also finish at
five-over par, |
77. "We
started making a few birdies around the turn,"
Cabbage added. "We did some better things on our
last nine holes and kind of settled in a little
bit and that is encouraging because it's something
we can build on for round two."
Freshman Raoul Menard led the
49ers with a two-over par round of 74 while Loftsson
shot three-over par 75 to pace the 49ers.
Liberty has the first round lead
at five-under par, five strokes ahead of
second-place SMU (E, 288). Tulsa (+5), UNLV (+5)
and Texas Tech (+6) round out the top five. -
