Grayson Murray finishes two under at the Rex Hospital Open

Raleigh, NC - May 23, 2010 - Rex Hospital Open - John Riegger didn't hit a shot on Sunday, but he was declared the winner when weather forced officials to call the event after 54 holes. It was Riegger's second Nationwide Tour win. Story

Under the radar of Riegger's win was Grayson Murray, the second-youngest player to make a cut in the Nationwide Tour's history.

"There's so many good players all over the world now, it doesn't matter if they're 16 or 60," said Riegger. "Golf doesn't know age."

Over in Texas another youngster was making a name for himself, Jordan Spieth, 16 and a junior in high school finishing at four under in the Byron Nelson classic. Spieth is the six youngest to make a PGA Tour cut.

Murray, bound for nearby Wake Forest University in 2012 on the prestigious Arnold Palmer Scholarship, rebounded from an opening 73 by hitting all 18 greens in regulation.

"I wanted to be the first to make the cut [at The Rex Hospital Open].

That's a great honor to have," said Murray, who three-putted three times for bogey before rallying with five birdies on his final seven holes. "I knew I could do it starting the day, even though I was 2-over. I was still confident with my game. When I three-putted No. 11, I was disgusted with myself. I told my caddie I was going to birdie out. I was two short of that."

With momentum going into the third round it was expected that Murray had found his groove and that he might just string a lot of birdies together for a run at the top of the leaderboard. Especially since he was starting off on the back nine where he posted those five birdies. But, it was not to be.

On day three Murray opened with seven consecutive pars keeping him even.  At seventeen, which has cost Murray a bogey on day one would end of charging him another bogey on day three.

Paring out on his ninth hole Murray makes the turn at one over for the day but still two under for the tournament.

After paring his 10th and 11th holes another nemeses hole, number three got him again for bogey making him two over for the day.

Settling down Murray then strings five pars together before closing out the day with a birdie on his 18th hole giving him a one over

round. Heading into the final round Murray was still two under and still believing he could throw a lot of birdies up on the board but that would have to wait as Sunday was cancelled and the tournament was shortened to 54 holes.

As Riegger said, "Golf knows no age" and this weekend across the country that saying was proved right. Have you ever heard from some of the mature golfers this saying, "I can't compete with those 25 year old limber backs?" It may not be long before you will hear those 25 year olds saying the same thing about these up and coming 16 year olds. Grayson Murray Captures Rex Hospital Open Junior Invitational

Raleigh, NC May 16, 2010 - Wakefield Plantation - The Annual Rex Hospital Open, a Nationwide Tour event also holds its Rex Hospital Open Junior Invitational the weekend before the Nationwide Tour event. A stellar field of junior boys and girls were invited to participate with the winning junior boy to be awarded a spot in the Nationwide Tour event scheduled for this up coming week.

With such a prize to the winner you can bet there would be some pretty good golf played and there was. Jumping to an early lead was Logan Harrell from Huntersville, NC.

Harrell knows the value of such a prize as he played in the qualifying portions of the eGolf Professional event held at Cowans Ford Dam CC the week May 3rd. Harrell missed the cut by just a couple of strokes.

Harrell’s three stroke lead of 66 the first day at Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the campus of NCSU was drawing a line in the sand telling everyone else if you want this spot on the Nationwide Tour you had better get low.

There were three players who were willing and most able to take up the challenge thrown down by Harrel.

There were three players who were willing and most able to take up the challenge thrown down by Harrel.

James Chapman from Gastonia, Andy Know from Cary and Grayson Murray from Raleigh with Murray being the most consistent performer of the three hovered over Harrell at three back after the first round.

The second round of play was played at the Hale Irwin designed TPC Wakefield Plantation in N. Raleigh. This is the same field of battle that the Nationwide Players would face each other down on.

Harrell’s 66 was a formidable number and as it turned out it was the lowest round recorded over the weekend. As the early part of the field came into the scorers tables you could tell that Wakefield was presenting much more of a challenge than did Poole. Higher scores for day two were becoming the norm.

Both Chapman and Knox failed to improve on day two with Chapman signing off on a second day round of 75 and Knox had to pencil in a round of 73 with both finishing the event at 142. However, Gregory Bunner, the 2010 1A Medalist managed to bring home the second best score of day two to end up in a tie for third along with Knox, and Chapman.

R Bob Scott Rex Healthcare Foundation - Grayson Murray

Word was filtering back that Grayson Murray was in pretty deep red numbers. This would require Harrell to not let up and play aggressively rather than defensive. Murray has spent the better part of his 2010 high school season at par or lower. Last Tuesday Murray claimed the 4A Medalist honors by bringing home a round of 68 on day two of the NCHSAA State playoffs.

When the dust had settled at 18 Murray walks off the battle field with his spot in the Rex Hospital by besting Harrell by

one stroke with a two day total of 136 to Harrell’s 137. The rest of the field was five strokes back.

Murray is going to Wake Forrest in the fall and you can already see a slight smile on Coach Hass’s face. This has been a banner year for this Raleigh native.

Green Hope Repeats as 4A State Champs
The third sub 70 round was attributed to Grayson Murray the number one junior golfer in NC and a member of Leesville Road team who ended the day taking second place in the 4A state playoffs.

Day one in the 4A classification found defending champion Green Hope in command of the lead followed by Leesville Road in second and Pinecrest in third.

Leesville was eight strokes behind Green Hope and Pinecrest was ten strokes off the

pace set by Green Hope. Scoring on day one was a lot higher than expected due to the 4A Classification,

There were only three sub par rounds on day one and only two on day two. Michael Cromie of Green Hope posted sub par rounds on both days helping to lead Green Hope to win their consecutive 4A state title.

Green Hope was the only 4A team to post back to back sub 300 rounds. Their day two total of 296 was matched by Leesville Road. As well balanced as both of these two teams are it would not take many strokes up or down to win or loose a match. That appears to be what happened to Leesville Road on day one.

The victory by Green Hope was a total team effort. Sure they have Cromie who can score pretty low but they also have four other players that score in the mid seventies. That is a combination that is hard to beat and that proved to be the reason for Green Hope’s retention of their 4A state champion title.

Leesville Road’s Grayson Murray from Hopewell, entered as an individual finished in third behind Murray and Cromie with a two day total of 142.

Fountain commits to Davidson
Richard Fountain, who finished T-2 at the Golfweek Junior Series event at Pine Needles in October, takes lessons from Ted Kiegiel, who also works with Wake Forest commit Grayson Murray and PGA Tour player Webb Simpson (who also went to Wake Forest). Fountain said he considered the idea of attending Wake

Forest, and made an unofficial visit once when he passed through the area, but had “minimal contact” with the school other than that. “Davidson and North Carolina were the two schools I wanted to go to anyway so it was good that those opportunities were available,” he said.

Academics were important to Fountain when choosing a school, and Davidson, a liberal arts school, fit the bill. The Raleigh, N.C., native also wanted to stay in state.

Marlowe paces Broughton title

- Staff Writer Newsobserver

Broughton High junior Bill Marlowe reached a level beyond sensational Monday as he romped around a hard-to-manage Anderson Creek Golf Club course in Spring Lake to post a 7-under-par 65 and easily win the state 4-A Mid-East golf regional.

Marlowe's superb round propelled the Caps, the Cap Seven 4-A runner-up behind Leesville Road, to a four-stroke victory over their league rival.

Green Hope also qualified for next week's N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A two-day championships with a 300. The 2009 state titlists were led by 2009 individual champ Michael Cromie, who was second behind Marlowe with a 2-under 70.

The regional had some of the top high school golfers in the state, including Leesville Road sophomore Grayson Murray (73), but nobody came close to Marlowe, who made seven birdies and no bogeys.

He dropped a 57-foot birdie putt on No. 8 and was 6 under after 11 holes on a course that was set up to test golfing skills and separate the really good from the good. Continue reading......

Pinecrest Squeezes by Clayton & Terry Sanford to take the East 4A Regional

Pinehurst, NC - May 3, 2010 – Pinehurst #1 – The 4A East Region sure had a barnburner going on Monday. Shoot a 293 and still do not get to go the state. That’s what happened to Purnell Swett. Pinecrest poured on the steam shooting a 288 which was about outdone by Terry Sanford and Clayton who each shot a 289. That is some good golf.

Andrew Furr of Clayton led the battle against Pinecrest carding a 68 but not to be outdone Jack Keefe of Terry Sanford capped Furr with his own 68. Thus Pinecrest, Clayton and Terry Sanford will meet again at the state.

Missing the cut by one stroke is hard to take but at least Purnell Swett will be represented at the State by Ian Locklear who shot a 69. Joining Locklear at the state as individuals is Patrick Sawrey and Bryce Young New Bern High.

Dylan Harris rose to the occasion at Pinehurst shooting his first sub par round of the season. This more than likely was the key to Pinecrest’s win. Sam Packard the leading golfer in the Southeastern conference shot par as did his team mate Nick Thompson. Rounding out the top scorers for Pinecrest is Austin Dunlap.

L-R Front RowZachary Martin, Bryan Stewart, Austin Dunlap, Coach Sackmann - Back Row L-R Dylan Harris, Sam Packard, Nick Thompson

The 288 that Pinecrest shot was their third best round of this season. On two occasions during the regular season Pinecrest shot a 287. Pinecrest couldn’t get under 300 last year at the state but it does not look like that will be the case this time around.  Click here for all the scores.....

Wilson Fike Snags the 3A East Regional Title

Pinetops, NC May 3, 2010 - Maccripine CC - Wilson Fike was the winning team yesterday with a score of 305.

Second place went to West Carteret  with a team score of 317. The third place victor was South Brunswick with a team score of 345.

The low score of the day was a
tie between Nathan Johnson of Nash Central with a score of 72 and
Spencer Whitt of Wilson Fike who shot a 72. Spencer won on the second playoff hole. Richard Weincacht of South Brunswick and Chris Sherrod are the other two players that will be going to the state tournament.

Topsail Claims First Ever 2A Regional Title

Tarboro, NC May 3, 2010 - Cotton Valley Golf Club – Topsail High is the current 1A State Champs but due to the rearrangement of conferences this year Topsail was moved into a 2A conference and has ended up winning the East 2A Regional meaning it will travel to Buies Creek on May 10th to do battle with the likes of Salisbury and the defending 2A State Champs N. Lincoln.

Coach Terry Robins of First Flight sends us this report from Cotton Valley. ” We're going to the state championship at Keith Hills.  What an exciting day of

golf at the Links atCotton Valley in Tarboro.  The par 72, 6130 yard wide open layout with its big fairways and big greens were a refreshing change from the tight fairways small greens we are used to and the Nighthawks ended up taking third with a new team record score of 309.  Senior John led the way with a 73, one shot behind medalist Patrick Morris from Topsail at 72.  John wowed the crowd at the last two holes by dropping a long putt on seventeen for a birdie and canning a treacherous downhill right to left breaker on eighteen for another birdie.  Junior Patrick Lamb came in second for the team with a 77.

Sophomores Zachary Robins and Ian Harrison shot 78 and 81 respectively.  Senior Andrew Styons came in with a 94.”

We are trying to get more of the scores for posting and will do so when they arrive.

First Flight Nighthawks Golf Team Closes Out The Season with a Win by Terry Robins

Southern Shores, NC April 29, 2010 In the seventh in a series of seven conference matches the Nighthawks of First Flight shot a four score total of 321 to take first place and be named conference champions with a record of 5 wins and 2 second place finishes.

Playing at home over the par 72, 6183 yard Duck Woods Country Club, First Flight was 11 shots better than their cross town rivals, the Pasquotank Panthers.

Senior Panther Jordan Cullens took medalist honors with a 77. Jordan and Nighthawk John Walters were in a battle for player of the year honors and it was decided that both players were equally deserving and will share the award this year.

Sophomore Zachary Robins came in second with a 79 and John Walters carded an 80 for third.

Sophomore Zachary Robins came in second with a 79 and John Walters carded an 80 for third.

First Flight's average team score this year was just above 330 but our last two match totals were  good enough to advance through to the state championship and beat half of the teams in that tournament last year.

This is what we've been working for all season and hopefully we can convert on Monday at Cotton Valley. Click here for all of the up to date scores.....

Topsail finishes on Top in the East Central 2A Conference

Kinston, NC - April 26, 2010 - Falling Creek Golf Club – Patrick Morris from Topsail High capped off his very productive season with his third under 70 round in the last conference match in the East Central 2A. Morris’s 68 at Falling Creek pushed his season stroke average down to 70.28 which resulted in him being crowned the Conference MVP.

The top 15 players in the conference were named all conference and Coach Jeff Gainey of Topsail was named Coach of the Year.

The top four teams in the conference and the top four individuals not from

any of the top four teams will advance to the 2A Eastern Regional Tournament that will be held on Monday May 3rd at Cotton Valley Golf Course. First Flight Loses To Greenbrier Christian Despite Strong Performances by Terry Robins

First Flight came in with a four score total of 318 to lose to the Greenbrier Christian Gators of Virginia carding a 307.

Playing good teams is important to improving your level of skill and we are

going to need it next week at the regionals on Monday.

Matching our best score this season wasn't enough to beat the Gators.  Duck Woods Country Club was in great shape and we didn't have any problem with playing the ball down.

Senior Nighthawk John Walters was the medalist with a one under par 71 on 6183 yard par 72 Duck Woods.  Four birdies and three bogeys illustrated John's round and with his play of late he will no doubt playing confidently at regionals and we look

forward to his continued success.

Playing alongside John was sophomore and second place finisher Zachary Robins of First Flight. Zach and John apparently fed off of each others good play because Zach fired a 73, his lowest competitive round to date.  Ashton Newsom of Greenbrier carded a 74 for third.  Gator Preston Leigh also playing with John and Zach came in  with a 75 to take fourth.

Pinecrest Locks in 2010

Pembroke, NC April 20, 2010 - Riverside Golf Club - Pinecrest High of the Southeastern 4A Conference has locked in another conference championship with their recent victory. They were led to victory by Zackary Martin and Sam Packard who shared the Medalist honors among themselves and Austin Locklear from Purnell Swett High.

Martin’s low round also moved him into first place as the conference

leader displacing Ina Locklear by just .17 of a stroke. This could change as they have a couple of matches left on the calendar.

Locklear's 79 brought his stroke average up bringing him into a tie for second place in the conference with Pinecrest's Same Packard and Sam Kosich. Another Pinecrest player, Bryan Stewart is just .17 of a stroke in third place.

Undefeated No More By Terry Robins

After four undefeated conference matches the First Flight Nighthawks Golf team blemished their perfect record and fell to the Pasquotank Panthers on tax day at The Pines in Elizabeth City.

For some reason the Nighthawks just can't get it together on the 6086 yard par 72 Tom Clark design.  The weather was great, the golf course dry and the greens firm and fast.  This course demands well placed shots and forethought which First Flight possessed neither.

Senior Nighthawk John Walters was the

lone player of First Flight's squad undaunted by the perils lurking and rose to snare medalisthonors with a round of 73 which included 4 birdies, 2 doubles and 1 bogey.

Will Suddreth of Pasquotank followed with a 75.  Third place went to Will Suddreth of Pasquotank followed with a 75.  Third place went to Pasquotank senior Jordan Cullens with a 78.  John and Jordan are in a heated battle for Player of the Year honors and right now are neck and neck.

Hertford County Coach Lee Wilson brought the Northhampton County High - East golf team from Conway with him and T. Whitley shoots a 79

having never seen the course.  Good Job Mr. Whitley.

Freshman Nighthawk Jarrett Davis broke 100 for the first time in competition this season by carding a 96 and moves into the NXT division.  It was just a matter of time.  Jarrett has a great attitude and good technique and will no doubt continue his success.

Next week it's off to the Carolina Club which I have assurance from the First Flight team there will be a different outcome.  We'll see.  Click here for all the up to date scores......

Topsail Continues its Dominance

Hampstead, NC (April 15, 2010) - Topsail Greens Golf Club - P. Morris led the Topsail Pirates to an 18 stroke victory in the East Central 2A Conference with a round of 71. Morris also took home the Medalist honors.

Clinton needed to win this one to keep its hope alive for the .

Conference Championship. Topsail now has a 36 stroke lead with very few holes left to play.

The top ten spots were filled with Topsail and Clinton players save for one, Trent Cloninger from Richlands. Cloninger was coming off back to

back rounds of 69 as he headed into this match. Today he could do no better than 78. Cloninger is just nine strokes from taking over the top spot in this conference.

Currently P, Morris is holding down the Championship spot with a 71.6 stroke average vs. Cloninger's  73.4.

Pinecrest remains Undefeated

Southeastern 4A Conference (April 12,13, 2010) – The Southeastern 4A Conference was busy the first back after Spring Break trying to make up matches that were cancelled due to bad weather. Spring Break took its toll on some of the players as evidenced by their unusually high scores.

In the first match on Monday the 12th, Pinecrest’s Zachary Martin won the Medalist honors with a 71. Then in Tuesday’s match

Pinecrest’s Brian Stewart won the Medalist honors with his best round of this season, a 67

Pinecrest continues its domination of the Southeastern 4A Conference with a team stroke average of 294, some 125 strokes ahead of second place Purnell Swett. Pinecrest is lead by Zachary Martin who is carrying a solid stroke average of 73.40 however; Sam Packard is carrying a stroke average of 73.00 but has only played in two events this season.

This Pinecrest team is as solid as they come. Pinecrest has not two or four but seven of its players in the top ten spots in the conference. That spells domination!

The other three spots in the top ten belong to Purnell Swett’s Ian Locklear, Alex Dial and Warren Bowen. Ian Locklear, after playing five events is leading the conference with a rock solid 73 stroke average.  Click here for all of the up to date scores......

Topsail Victorious in 2A as they were in 1A

Jacksonville, NC – (April 12, 2010) Jacksonville Country Club – Trent Clonninger from Richlands High threw up another 69 for back to back 69’s. In Monday’s match he was headed into the last two holes of his round at seven under! By the time he walked off his last hole he could only add up enough marks to total 69. He tripled his next to last hole and bogeyed his last hole. Clonninger’s 69 was not enough to help Richlands take home the victory.    Topsail, the 2009 1A State Champs did so with an impressive 297 that added 19 more strokes to their conference lead over Clinton. Both Clinton and Topsail have four of its players in the top ten leaving only two spaces that the number two spot is owned by Clonninger and the fourth spot is owned by J. Tucker of So Lenoir.   Topsail’s P. Morris is currently leading the conference with a stroke average of 71.75 which is only a half stroke ahead of Colnninger who is closing the gap very rapidly. The “IF” game says if both Clonninger and Morris continue at the pace they are playing and they have two more matches then Clonninger will be the conference leader when all the dust settles. This is going to be an exciting two weeks to see how this battle for the conference lead comes out. Click here for all the up to date scores.....
