Vici Pate Flesher named HPU women's golf coach

"I am excited about the upcoming season and the future of the women's golf program," Pate Flesher added. "The young women currently playing for High Point will be integral in building the foundation of not only a winning program, but a program the players and school can be proud of."

Pate Flesher was named NCAA Div. III National Coach of the Year in both 2005 and 2006. In her best season at Methodist, Pate Flesher's team was ranked 64th across all divisions. The team won two Div. I tournaments and took second at another.

At Methodist, Pate Flesher was also assistant director of the Professional Golf Management program. In that role, she taught classes on golf management and teaching methods. She was also a regular instructor with the Monarchs' top-ranked men's golf program and was an instructor for MU's junior and advanced camps.

Prior to her time at Methodist, Pate Flesher worked as an instructor at several golf academies, including the Academy of Golf at PGA National Resort and Spa, which is rated as one of the top-25 golf schools in the United States by Golf Digest.

Pate Flesher is one of 300 instructors certified by the PGA. She has served as a National Golf Coaches Association board member and as a member of the Div. III Awards Committee.

Pate Flesher graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in Communications in 1990. She was a three-year co-captain on the Illinois State golf team and a first-team All-Conference honoree. Pate earned a master's degree in Sports Science with a degree in Sports Studies from the United State Sports Academy in 2007.

Jan Mann, North Carolina head women's golf coach:

"I have had the pleasure of knowing Vici Pate Flesher for many years and I want to express how pleased I am that she will be the new women's golf coach at High Point University. Vici has proven that she can build and maintain a strong golf program while always putting the student-athletes' welfare first. I am certain that she will do a tremendous job. Congratulations on a great hire."

Jason Rodenhaver, Maryland head women's golf coach:

"I have known Vici for over 10 years and I have the utmost respect for her as a coach. She will be great for High Point University for sure. She won several national championships at Methodist and I think High Point made a great hire there.

Kevin Williams, East Carolina head women's golf coach:

"I have the upmost respect for the coaching ability of Vici Pate Flesher. She is an excellent teacher, coach and even better person. Vici will be a tremendous ambassador for High Point University and its athletic department. Her ability to 'coach up' her players will play a vital role in the future success that I know High Point women's golf will experience under her leadership."

Meet the New 3A State Champs

One of the more exciting tournaments was at the 3A championship. Hickory High was returning as the defending 3A champions. Hickory had a rough season scoring during the regular season at levels that could return them to the ownership of the 3A title. As it turned out their end of season stroke average was in line with what it took to win the 2010 title.

Hickory ended the first day as the tournament leader by a slim four strokes mostly off the back of their number one, JT Poston who shot the only sub 70 round of the day in all of the four sites. As it worked out there were only three sub 70 rounds for the whole two days, two of them at the 3A event.

Sitting on Hickory’s shoulder at four strokes back was the three year old school Northern Guilford. Northern Guilford plays in one of

Sitting on Hickory’s shoulder at four strokes the toughest 3A conferences in the state and quarter. On two occasions Guilford bested Williams. By the end of the season Northern Guilford finished only 45 strokes behind Williams.

After winning the right to advance to the regional they continued their march toward Pinehurst while Williams found themselves on the outside looking in. Northern Guilford put up a good fight at the regional but found themselves tied for second with another 3A powerhouse Ledford but thirteen strokes behind the perennial state title contender Cardinal

Gibbons. All three schools would meet at Firefox.

As the first day at Firefox unfurled Cardinal Gibbon's number four and five could not duplicate their regional scores thus pushing Gibbons back into the pack at fourth. Northern Guilford’s number four and five also could not duplicate their regional scores but to their favor. Jeffrey Jackman posted an 83 at the regional but carded a 76 on day one. Gerard Castagnet scored an 80 at the regional but posted a 77 on the first day at the state. This contribution by Jackman and Castagnet brought Northern Guilford into second place just four strokes behind defending and clubhouse leader Hickory.

Northern Guilford was sandwiched between two Western Regional teams; the reigning 3A champs Hickory and Fred T. Foard, the only team to beat Hickory twice in regular conference play as well as in their County Championship.  Foard was one behind Northern Guilford at 309.

Cloudy skies and eventually some rain greeted the players on day two. Though the skies looked gloomy there was no gloom on Northern Guilford’s mind and in particular their number four Castagnet.

Castagnet opened day two with four consecutive birdies and a front side score of 33. He would go on to finish with a 72 and a two day total of 149. With this big boost by Northern Guilford’s number four they went on to finish day two with a total of 300 putting the pressure on Hickory and Foard.

Forestview had to wait for Hickory, Foard and Northern Guilford to come in and one by one it began to put a smile on the faces of the Forestview team. They were witnessing the gap from the first day to narrow offering a ray of hope for a victory.

Hickory’s three and four were not performing as well. Peter Harrill posted a duplicate 79 of his first day score and Win Balatow could not get a putt to fall resulting in a three stroke increase over his first day total. Matthew Turner bettered hisfirst day number by three on day two. With these

number the first day Medalist, JT Poston would have to repeat his first day number of 68 for any chance of winning. Poston could do not better than 74 but his 74 was good enough to award him the tournaments Medalist.

Foard came in two strokes better than Hickory on day two but it was not enough to put them in contention. Foard finished in fourth at 616.

While Foard, Hickory and Northern Guilford was battling it out the ever threat Forestview was quietlymaking an assault on the leaders and by the time they had all come to the clubhouse they had posted a round of 295, the only sub 300 round of the tournament.

Click here for a larger photo

When the last of Northern Guilford and Hickory players had turned in their scorecards it was apparent that Forestview had pushed Hickory and Foard aside to end day two in a tie with the young Northern Guilford at 608 requiring a scorecard playoff to settle the tie

The following is the current rule on the performance of a scorecard playoff:

If two or more teams are tied, go to 5th golfer’s scores and compare. Lowest score wins.

If still tied, go to 6th golfer. If still tied, must have playoff. Numbers 1-2 from 1st team tee off, then 1-2 from other team(s)…then 3-4 tee off (best scores).

As a result of this procedure Northern Guilford came away the winner and was crowned the new 3A State Champions. Click here for all the scores....

Greensboro, NC May 12, 2010-  The new Men's 3A State Champions are the Nighthawks from Northern Guilford High a very new school built within the last three years. That alone, in most cases would mean that it would be quite a few years before the school amasses sport talents well enough to perform in their conference let alone earn state playoff status and better yet walk off with a state championship. N. Guilford came on line in one of the largest school districts in the state and you would expect it to be really hard to find skilled sports  talents  that is not already playing at an established school. Add to this the fact that N. Guilford would play in one of the most challenging 3A conferences in the state. No one would expect such a quick return on this investment. But here they are the new 3A State Champs in three years on their first trip to the state playoffs.

The key, as their coach Chris Jones said was their depth, meaning depth in scoring ability. From their number one to their number six all of them has and have scored when needed. Hats off for a job well done! Click here for a video interview with the Nighhawks.

Cardinal Gibbons Crusader's Win MidEast 3A Region

Burlingotn, NC May 3, 2010 – Indian Valley Golf Club - The MidEast 3A Regional title was claimed by Cardinal Gibbons High with a round of 298 which was 13 strokes ahead of second place finisher N. Guilford and Ledford. All three of these teams will be traveling to Foxfire next Monday May 10th.

The name missing from the above list is

Williams. Williams was strong all season losing only one match, the lastone of the season. So whatever happened in the last match of the season carried over to the Regional. Williams nine hole matches for the last five matches were well under the 150 mark but their last round, an 18 hole match was at 300.

Notably missing also is Robert Register from Williams who did not make the top ten at the regional. Just more proof to the ole adage of “on any given day etc..”

Daniel Brantley from Asheboro tied with Jack Radley and Zack Lewis from Southern Lee for the low round of the day at 72. All three will go to the state as individual competitors. Brantley has been as consistent as the sun rising in the east all year. As for Radley and Lewis we do not know much of them from a lack of input from Southern Lee but if they do as well at Foxfire as they did at Indian Valley they will do well at the state.

Northern Guilford Ends Season with a Victory

Burlington, NC April 29, 2010 Indian Valley Golf Club – The Mid State 3A Conference closed out its 2010 season at Indian Valley golf Club with Northern Guilford taking home the victory. This is the first solo win for N. Guilford. Earlier in the season N. Guilford shared in a tie with Williams.

The lead man for N. Guilford was Colin McKenna who has brought his “A” game to the course the last two events.

McKenna won his first Medalist honor of the season with a round of 69. In his last match McKenna carded a round of 34 tying the top two golfers of the Mid State 3A Conference, Robert Register and Clay Holland, the latter just signed a letter of intent to play golf for Elon College.

The 293 that N. Gilford posted in this victory is at a state championship pace. Jeffery Jackman and Vincent Frycontributed to N. Guilford’s win with a pair of 75’s which were under their season stroke average. Sealing the deal for N. Guilford was their number four, Gerard Castagnet who brought home a 79 that was well under his season stroke average. This is the type of play that N. Guilford will need in the region that begins next week. Click here for all of the up to date scores....

from Essick to their number five, Aaron Abts was 1.75. Needless to say Leford led the All Conference team.

The Mid Piedmont 3A Conference team selection was as follows:

Leesville Hangs On to Win the Cap 7 4A Conference

Raliegh, NC - April 27, 2010 TPC Wakefield Plantation – Broughton High came to the TPC with fire in their bellies and wondering if it would be possible to snatch the conference championship out the jaws of the Lessville Pride on this last day of the season? They must have believed that they could and boy did they almost do it.

Broughton came out swinging with Bill Marlowe leading the way. Marlowe, who is just tenths of a percent behind the number one junior golfer in North Carolina, let be known that he too could throw up some low numbers and he did. Marlowe hardly worked up a sweat using only 31 strokes to get around the TPC at Wakefield.

As word of Marlowe’s scoring spread around the TPC it must have inspired the rest of his team.  Richard Fountain carded his second best round of the season with a 36 and George Kilgore brought to the scorers table his lowest round of the season, a 36.

In our last comments on this conference we thought that the 16 stroke lead that Leesville had built up was going to be insurmountable in this remaining match and yet after the first three golfers came to the scorer’s table it was Broughton 103 and Leesville Rd. 112.  The conference championship rested in the hands of their number four golfer. It does not get any better than this.

When all the dust had settled Broughton came up four strokes short but what a match! These two teams are only .57 of a stoke different over the course of this season. Without a doubt these two teams will be headed for the state and will become a problem for some team.

Fireworks over Indian Valley Golf Course

Burlington, NC - April 21, 2010 Indian River Golf Course -  The Mid State 3A conference really put on a show at Indian River Golf Course - Three 34’s from three different schools. Williams Robert Register, West Alamance’s Clay Holland and Northern Guilford’s  Colin McKenna shared the Medalist honors with triplicate 34’s on the par 70 Indian River Course.

The difference between Williams first place win and Morehead’s third place finish was two stokes. Northern

Guilford was sandwiched in between Williams and Morehead with one off the winning tally. With every loss by a stroke, the “What if” thoughts arise and use up the remaining hours in a day.

Its about time to put this season to bed. The Mideast 3A regional will be played at Indian Valley on Monday, May 3rd. The host for the regional is Williams.  Click here for all the up to date scores.....

Broughton is Fighting Back

Youngsville, NC April 21, 2010 Old Liberty Golf Club – Broughton is not giving up. With very little time left they have won the last two matches gaining nine strokes on Leesville Rd. The six strokes that Broughton won by today moved them to within 16 strokes of lead.

It took all four of Broughton’s players to be in the top six finishes to beat Leesville Rd. Leesville Rd. had only two players in the top ten finishes. They were Grayson Murray with a superb round of 34, his third sub par round in a row and Larry Han with a 40.

Broughton was lead to victory by Bill Marlow who tied Murray for the Medalist honors in the match before this one. Today Marlow brought home a two under par 35. Will Wheless and Cyrus Stewart carded a pair of 39’s to help bring in the victory for Broughton. Broughton’s number four today was Richard Fountain with a 40.

Broughton Finally gets into the Win Column

Raleigh, NC April 19, 2010 - Northridge Country Club - Leesville Rd., the conference leader in the Cap 7 4A looked like the winner today with a round of 140 but Broughton would not be denied again.

Broughton was led by Will Wheless who matched Leesville's Murray with a round of 33 the Broughton.  Helping Wheless to push back Leesville Rd were Bill Marlowe and Ryan Fricke who both shot 35. To seal the deal Broughton's #4, Richard Fountain came in with a 38 for the best round for high school golf this season - a 138!!!

Wheless moved into second place over all behind Murray with his round of 33 today. He moved M. Conley back into third but by less than one stroke. Wheless is 1.27 strokes behind Murray with two matches to go before the regionals.

With two matches to go Broughton still needs 22 strokes to win the conference.

Williams Shares Win with E. Alamance

Greensboro, NC (April 15, 2010) – Bryan Park Golf Club – The Mid State 3A Conference leader Williams was surprised by the upstarts at E. Alamance when they broke out of their shell to post their lowest nine hole round ever. Coach Agular reported that this score of 145 broke E. Alamance nine hole record and added, “I hope we can

continue to build confidence and battle for a spot to make the regionals.”

E. Alamance’s Joseph Dail and Zach Crouch led the charge toward the record breaking round with identical rounds of 35. The leaders got a lot of help from Alex Daly when he came in at 37 and the new guy at E. Alamance, Taylor Stewart only took 38 strokes to get around the nine at Bryant Park. Nothing to it!

The Medalist honor was awarded to Jeffery Jackman from N. Gilford with a round of 34 which was his lowest round of the season as well.

The ball was played down for the first time this season and the course, as it always seems to be, was in great shape. Half the field shot 39 or better. With not much time left N. Guilford needs to make up the 36 stroke gap it has with Williams if they want the conference crown.

Colin McKenna the conference leader was not as fortunate in this match as he was in the half of the field that did not shoot 39. However, he could be the key to N. Guilford coming on strong to over take Williams.

Asheboro Cards their lowest round of the seasonBadin Lake, NC (April 14, 2010) – Badin Inn Golf - Asheboro High School played a non-conference tri-match at Badin Inn Golf Resort against North and West  Stanly High Schools.

Coach Helsabeck left the course beaming from ear to ear because his team carded their best score of the year. He said, “by far.  In fact, it is the best number I've seen put up around here all year.  I'm sure there have been better

ones, but this day was pretty special for us.” You can just hear Coach Helsabeck’s excitement in his words.

Most golf teams have qualifying matches to determine their starting line up for each match. Coach Helsabeck said that senior Nolan Wilson won a place on the starting line up with a round of 41 on Wednesday. Winning place on the starting lineup meant that Wilson

would be playing in his first ever match of this season. As Coach Helsabeck said, “He came in with an unbelievable score of 38, 3-over par, in his first start.”

Daniel Brantley, medalist for the Mid-Piedmont conference for the season, was medalist today with a 2-under par 33.

Daniel Brantley - 33
Kirby Moffit-37
Nolan Wilson-38
Bradley Dawkings-40

Ledford, A Big
5 & 0

Archdale, NC - Holly Ridge Golf Links -  The Mid Piedmont 3A Conference got under way after its Spring Break just where it left off with Ledford continuing their winning streak.

With two weeks left till the regional Ledford looks pretty much in control of the Mid Piedmont Conference. Assuredly in the Regional however, Ledford will run into the buzz saw

called Williams. To beat Williams Ledford will have to bring a score to the table like the one they carded on Monday.

One thing is for sure and that is that there will be some really good golf played at the 3A Mid East Regional.

Ledford is lead by Will Essick and Chad Miller who both are carrying the same stroke average of 38.40 through five matches. All season the Ledford team has all five of their players in the top six spots from week to week whereas Williams top five are spread out

among the top 15 spots. This small grouping by Ledford at the top may be the key to them defeating Williams for the regional top spot.

Ledford’s three through five men have a spread of less than one stroke separating them. They are Cam Weis, Aaron Abts and Steven Fuquay.

May tenth is just around the corner so the next two weeks are crucial for the teams. The Spring Break does not appear to have harmed Ledford. Click here for all the scores.....

Murray Leads Leesville Rd to a fourth win

Raleigh, NC (April 12, 2010) Wildwood Green Golf Club – Grayson Murray continues to prove why he is the number one junior golfer in North Carolina by his three under par round in Tuesday’s event.

Right behind Murray was Richard Fountain of Broughton with a great round of 33, two under par. Murray’s 32 helped Leesville Road post a team total of 140. If they can take that kind of round to the state championships in three weeks there may be some new records to post.

The Wake Forest headed Murray is piling up the accolades that is making Coach Hass at Wake Forest drool with anticipation of his arrival.

Murray’s stroke average is a full two strokes ahead of M. Conley and C. Jenkins at 36.75. With Murray’s help Leesville is leading the Cap 7 4A conference but not by much. Only 25 strokes separate these Leesville from Broughton.

Leesville has five players in the top ten and Broughton has four. The number two spot in the top ten is held by Wakefield’s M. Conley. Click here for all the up to date scores....
