TALBERT & HOCKER II
WIN 22ND CHARLES TILGHMAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP |
|
NORTH
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (December 11, 2012)
- Michael Hocker II of Chapel Hill, NC and McKenzie Talbert
of North Augusta, SC have won the 22nd Charles Tilghman
Junior Championship played at the Surf Golf & Beach Club in
North Myrtle Beach, SC.
It was a brisk, windy Sunday at the Surf Golf & Beach Club,
but you wouldn't know it by looking at the scorecard of
Michael Hocker II. Hocker put together one of the best
rounds ever at the Surf Club, most certainly by a junior
golfer, shooting a bogey-free round of 66. He recorded 6
birdies along the way, including three in a row at the 9th,
10th, and 11th holes. Sinking his par putt on the par-3 18th
hole, Michael gave a slight fist pump and breathed a huge
sigh of relief as he finished his best round ever. His
final-round 66 was enough to give him both the overall boys
and boys 17-18 division titles.
Hocker's 139 was just
enough to hold off Townville, SC's Austin Langdale, who
fired two straight 70's for a 140 (-4) total and took second
place in the boys 17-18 division. Jacob Hicks of Mebane, NC
took home third place in the boys 17-18 division with a 144
(E).
Benjamin
Griffin of Chapel Hill, NC had a great showing in the
tournament, winning the boys 15-16 division with a 71-72=143
(-1). There was a tie for second place between Jonathan
Hardee of Greer, SC and Noah Edmondson of Davidson, NC with
a 147 (+3). Leaderboard........ |

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NC - November 27, 2011 -
Winternational
Junior Series -
On a sun-filled,
unseasonably mild Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the Winternational Junior Series
held its second event of the 2011-2012 season. The venue was Tom Fazio’s
Pinehurst No. 4, which measured 6658 yards for these high school students and
played to a par of 36-36--72 for the two rounds of stroke play. In the
Junior-Senior Division, Reggie
Crews
of Jacksonville, N.C. came from one shot off the first round pace to defeat
Micah Alexander of Durham, NC and Brigham Stewart, of Cedar Rapids, IA , who
tied for runner-up honors, one shot in arrears. Though there was only one
stroke separating Crews, a junior at Jacksonville High School, and Mitchell
Ellis of Greensboro following round one, Ellis fell out of contention in round
two finishing 71-81—152, dropping him to the division’s fourth place position.
Crews’ stellar start, which included four
front-nine birdies, jump started his
weekend with a four under par 32 on his opening nine
in round one.
In the
Freshman-Sophomore Division,
Winternational
veteran David Kocher, a sophomore at Charlotte
Christian School, recorded the division’s low round
on Saturday with his 76, and maintained his lead in
round two to record the division’s low round and
take the title 76-78—154. Finishing just one shot
behind Kocher was Event #1’s Freshman-Sophomore
winner, Alex Smalley, a sophomore at Wake Forest-Rolesville
High. Winston-Salem resident Gray Townsend finished
third, two strokes ahead of fourth place O’Neal
School freshman James Sugg, of Pinehurst.
Mary
Barbero’s, of Fairfax Station, VA consistent play
through both rounds kept her in the Girl’s Division
lead, finishing ahead of second place Hailey Crider
of Pinehurst. Barbero, a senior at South Country
Secondary School, will
attend Winthrop
College in the fall of 2012. Her play on the four
par three holes each day consisted of two birdies
and six pars, which spelled the difference for her
victory.

Winternational Junior Series
Begins 18th Consecutive Year at Pinehurst
Resort |
|
|
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST,
NORTH CAROLINA: November 13, 2011 -
The Winternational
Junior Series, which consists of eight championship events for high school age
boys and girls, played its first event of the 2011-2012 Season this weekend at
the Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC. This series, the oldest of
its kind in the Country, has had over 2000 young men and women pass through its
membership since its inception in 1993. This year nearly 100 members of the
Series are invited to play any or all of the events on six of the eight
Pinehurst Resort courses, including two events on designer Donald Ross’ famous
Pinehurst No. 2.
As in past years, the high school boys are
divided into two divisions; one for Juniors and Seniors and the other for
Freshmen and Sophomores. Following round 1, Alex Smalley, from Wake Forest, was
leading the Freshman-Sophomore Division, three shots
ahead of Holly Springs’ Timothy Conover. Only three
shots separated the next six players in the
Freshman-Sophomore Division after the first day of
play on Centennial Pinehurst No. 8. Smalley, in his
second season as a Winternational Junior Series
participant, and a freshman at Wake Forest-Rolesville
High School, went on to win the Freshman-Sophomore
Division title 75-77—152, increasing his lead to
five shots in round 2, due in no small part to four
birdies in the second round. Conover, a sophomore at
Holly Springs High School, remained in second place
finishing 78-79—157, one shot ahead of third place
Court Settle of Raleigh (79-79—158). Ethan Mead of
Charlotte finished fourth.
It was a close race in the Junior-Senior Division, as well. After round 1,
Reggie Crews of Jacksonville was one
shot ahead of a three-way tie for
second between Mitchell Ellis of
Greensboro, Trey Guy of
Fayetteville, and Edmond Brooks IV
of Sanford. But it was Guy, a junior
at Terry Sanford High School, who
battled stiff winds in round 2 to
garner the Junior-Senior Division
win 76-76—152. Crews followed one
shot behind Guy (75-78—153) to take
second. Greg Mauldin from Archdale,
a junior at Westchester Country Day
School finished third, and Edmond
Brooks IV of Sanford finished
fourth.
In
the Girl’s Division, Gabrielle Weiss
of Pinehurst took home the Girl’s
Division Champion trophy. Weiss, a
sophomore at Pinecrest High School,
who relocated to the area from
Macungie, PA only two weeks ago,
shot a solid 83-78—161. Though the
seventeenth hole proved to be a
challenge both days, Weiss used the
first hole as an equalizer, scoring
a birdie there in round 1 and an
eagle in round 2. In second place,
from Greenwich, CT, was Camilla Vik, scoring
87-87—174.
The
Winternational Junior Series will
hold its second event November
26-27, on another of Tom Fazio’s
design gems, Pinehurst No. 4. Please

Men’s Golf Signs Three For
The Class Of 2016
Grayson Murray and Davis Womble are two
of the top junior golfers in North Carolina
|
|
|
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
Wake Forest men’s golf head coach Jerry Haas has announced
the signing of three student-athletes for the class of 2016. Grayson Murray,
Davis Womble and Andrew Winters all signed national letters of intent this
past week.
Murray is one of the top junior golfers
in the country. He won the Callaway Junior World title three-straight years
and also won the 2010 REX Hospital Open Junior Invitational, earning a spot in
the Nationwide Tour’s REX Hospital Open. Murray fired a second round 66 in the
REX Hospital Open and became the second-youngest player to make the cut on the
Nationwide Tour. He won a North Carolina 4-A Individual State Championship as
a sophomore and then led Leesville Road High School to a team title as a
junior.
“I’ve got a
picture on my bulletin board of Grayson when he
was about 12 years old and he wrote that he wanted
to go to Wake Forest,” said Haas. “He’s one of the
most decorated junior golfers we’ve had commit
here. He’s kind of in the mold of Bill Haas and
Webb Simpson. Grayson has won probably close to
100 tournaments so he’s played some big time golf
and he will bring some stability for us the next
four years.”
Womble, who
is in his senior year at Wesleyan Christian
Academy in High Point, N.C., has also had a
tremendous junior golf career. He won the NCISAA
3-A state individual title in 2011 and was named
the 3-A North Carolina Player of the Year. In
addition to earning All-State Team honors four
times, Womble was named the 2010 North Carolina
Junior Player of the Year after winning the prestigious
Carolinas Junior Championship.
“Davis is a tall kid with great
touch around the greens,” said
Haas. “He’s one of those kids that
once he finishes growing and fits
his swing to his body, he’s going
to be a tremendous player. He won
the Carolinas Junior last summer
which is an event that guys like
Bill Haas and Lee Bedford have
won. If you look at the list of
guys who have won that tournament,
they’ve turned out to be really
good players.”
Winters is a senior this year at
The Kinkaid School in Houston,
Texas. He has led Kinkaid to no
worse than a second place finish
in the Southwest Preparatory
Conference each of the last three
years, including a team title in
2010. Winters has also had
tremendous success on the Texas
Junior Golf Tour the last couple
of years and recently won the
prestigious Texas Cup
Invitational.
“Andrew just shot 70-69 to win the
Texas Cup here recently and beat a
lot of other guys that will be
going to DI programs,” said Haas.
“He’s a smart player with a great
work ethic. Just spending a little
time with him, I could tell he’s
mature enough where I don’t think
he’ll come in here and be scared.
I’m really looking forward to
having Andrew in our program the
next four years.”
Haas is excited about the signing
class and knows this group has the
opportunity to join the existing
players and perhaps, do something
special.
“I feel like we got the two best
players in North Carolina in
Grayson and Davis,” Haas said.
“Then you add a good young player
like Andrew and I think this will
be the deepest team I have ever
had. Obviously, we lose a very
good player in Lee Bedford next
year but with guys like Evan Beck
and Charlie Harrison getting
another year under their belts and
the depth of the rest of the
squad, I think we can be very
good.”

two North Carolina players, Patrick Stephenson of Four Oaks

coaches of the T.I.S.A.C
have been working real
hard over the last few
years to convenience
teams to come on board
with the idea of a state

girl teams.

The T.I.S.A.C held
their conference
championship this week
at Hasentree CC
consisting of teams from
Ravenscroft, Saint
Mary’s School, Durham
Academy and North
Raleigh Christian
Academy. Ravenscroft
came off the course the
victor completing their
season undefeated. The
Ravens are led by Evie
Dole, a junior and one
of the top 15 junior
girl golfers in the
state. Her round of 75
was good enough for the
medalist honors but Dole
had to share the honor
with teammate Jessica
Kittelberger, a
sophomore who is
currently ranked as the
22nd best
junior girl golfer in
the state.
Comments from Coach
Dough Hodges about this
outing were, ““We
had a very successful
event at the beautiful
but extremely
challenging Hasentree
Club. This was a
first complete 18 hole
event for a number of
these girls and they did
very well on this
challenging 5166 yard
rolling course with very
fast greens. Evie
Dole and Jessica
Kittelberger
distinguished themselves
with very fine rounds of
75 to earn medalist
honors and lead their
Ravenscroft team to the
team championship in
this first ever event.
Cameron Little with 81
and Katie Seymour with
83 led the Saint Mary's
School Saints to a
second place finish.” |
Coach Hodges continued,
“Evie Dole was the
conference Player of the
Year and joining her on
the All-Conference team
are teammates Jessica
Kittelberger, Caroline
Hansen, and Mariel
Ziperski. Katie Seymour,
Cameron Little, Katie
Nash, and Taylor Currin
join them from Saint
Mary's School and Kim
Bryan rounds out the
All-conference team from
North Raleigh Christian
Academy.”
And in closing his
comments he said, “We
all look forward to next
week’s State
Championship, another
inaugural event, at the
Champions Course at
Bryan Park in
Greensboro. We
expect girls from up to
10 schools to come
together for this first
event of this kind for
girls from NCISAA
schools. Tee times
will start next Monday
at 8:30 am from both #1
and #10 tees”.
The boy’s teams in the
NCISAA have been playing
state playoffs for
several years now but
this is the first for
the girl’s teams who
belong to the NCISAA.
The CHNT will have
complete results on
Monday night as for this
first time the State
Championship will be
contested over 18 holes.
As this effort matures
most like the girls will
play 36 hole events for
the championship. -

Comets Win 7th Annual Emma
Ducey Memorial Tournament By:

New London, NC- October 18, 2011- Old North State Club-
This year marked the 7th
Annual Emma Ducey Memorial Tournament, which was played on
Tuesday, October 18 and held at Old North State Club in
New London.
Old
North State Club is a private golf course that was honored
as the #2 spot by Golf Digest in the ranking of best private
courses in the United States.
Old North State Club has received the ranking of having the
best par three and finishing hole in North Carolina, and has also been
recurrently ranked by the North Carolina Golf Panel as the
top private course of the state.
Old North State Club was an accommodating host to the teams,
providing a delicious lunch to the golfers, and a beautiful
course to play.
This tournament is played each year in honor of
Emma Ducey, a former
Asheboro
golfer who was an outstanding player and led the Blue Comets
to a regional championship. She graduated from
Asheboro High School in 2002 and was
tragically killed in a car accident in July of 2004.
Asheboro,
Eastern Randolph, Providence Grove and
Southwestern Randolph high schools played in the tournament.
Wheatmore had two players represent the team, but
unfortunately didn’t have enough players compete for a
qualifying score. This first year team will hopefully
be able to participate with all of their players in the Emma
Ducey Memorial
Tournament in years to come.
Asheboro
won the tournament with a total score of 290, being the
second consecutive year that the Comets have won. The
Blue Comets were led by silver medalist, Jana Morehart, who
shot an 83. Senior’s Addie Schoenberger (100) and Cala
Farina (107) contributed to the team score. Tanner
Brown also carded a matching score of 107.
Southwestern
Randolph
got second place with a team score of 296. The Cougars
were led by gold medalist, Rachel Jones, with an 81,
followed by Alicia Marion (105) and Kaylie Hamby (110).
Eastern Randolph
came in third with a total of 324. Bronze medalist,
Tessa Davis, led the team with a score of 88. This was
Davis’ third successive year that she medaled in this
tournament. Taylor Maness (117) and Jennifer Hubbard
(119) added to their team score.
The Emma Ducey Memorial Tournament is an event that
all the girls look forward to and is a memorable end to
every golf season.

Northern
Guilford wins for their sixth time at Deep
Springs |
STONEVILLE,
NC – October 17, 2011 – Deep Springs GC – The
Mid-State 3A Conference put the crowning touch to
their season with an 18 hole event at Deep Springs
GC in Stoneville, NC.
There was some
great golf played at Deep Springs today. The
Northern Guilford Nighthawks and the West Alamance
Warriors clashed for the last time this season in
conference play and boy did they leave an impression
on each other as they fought down to the last
stroke.
All year these
two teams have been going at each other. The Season
opened with the Warriors winning the first two
matches. Then the Nighthawks came back and won the
next three matches. At the end of five matches the
Nighthawks had a 13 stroke advantage from which the
Warriors could not recover. The Warriors did win the
sixth match but by only thee strokes.
But, with
today’s match, the Warriors gave the Nighthawks
something to remember them by, a real hard fought
match that the Nighthawks scraped by with a single
stroke to win their sixth match of the season. So
the Nighthawks go home with all the marbles except
for one – the Player of the Year award.
marbles except
for one – the Player of the Year award.
Head
Warrior Heather Dockrill, who had a heck of a first
half of the season, was crowned the Mid-State 3A
Player of the Year. Dockrill also won this title
last season, the first year of coverage by the CGNT.
Dockrill’s round of 82 won for her a sixth medalist
honor this season though she had to share this last
one with Allie Vaughn of Williams.
Vaughn’s
effort brought the Williams Bulldogs in at 281 for a
third place finish today at Deep Springs.
Chris
Jones, head coach for the Nighthawks came away with
another Coach of the Year award after his Nighthawks
demonstrated how good a team they are. By season’s
end Coach Jones had a powerful one two punch in his
No. one and two, Taylor Penzer and Elizabeth Ewing.
Both players today finished with a pair of 86’s.
Coach Jones put together a well rounded team this
season ending up with four of his six players
finishing the season in the top ten. Nicole Kasica
and Bryce Houtoon provided all season long good No.
3 scores that enabled the Nighthawks to be as
successful as they were.
Now it is on
to the regional at the Meadowlands on Monday,
October 24th. -

Northern Guilford
Wins the Mid-State
3A Conference |
|
|
MEBANE, NC – October
13, 2011 – The Club at
Mill Creek – The
Nighthawks of Northern
Guilford went into this
match 15 strokes ahead
of the Warriors of West
Alamance. It would be
almost impossible to
make that many strokes
up in a nine hole event.
All the Nighthawks had
to do was go out there
and play fairways and
greens and that is what
they did.
In this last match of
this season Elizabeth
Ewing won her first
medalist medal with a
round of 38, a round
that was three strokes
under her stroke
average. Taylor Penzer
and Bryce Huntoon
completed the team total
of 124 with round of 42
and 44 respectively.
The threesome of
Warriors that made up
their team total of 126
was Heather Dockrill
with a 40, Taylor Ross
with a 42 and Clarie
Dockrill topping it out
with a 44. This is
Heather Dockrill’s third
round at forty or more
out of the last four
rounds. Prior to that,
she had shot nothing
higher than a 37 in her
first four matches.
The third place team
title went to the
Bulldogs of Williams.
Alli Vaughn led the Dogs
with a 46.

Wakefield
Wolverines Capture Cap 8 Conference Title
Stephanie Pribonic Crowned Conference Champ |
|
|
RALEIGH, NC
– October 13, 2011 – Hedingham Golf Club – In
this final conference match of the Cap 8 4A
Conference the Wakefield Wolverines capped off their
2011 season with their sixth victory of the season.
The lead Wolverine, Stephanie Pribonic, came away
with the individual champion title as well with a
stroke total of 269 and averaged 38.43 strokes a
round*.
It is here that the CGNT would like
to acknowledge that over the last few articles
published concerning the Cap 8 Conference in regards
to the individual championship race our comments
were based on our incomplete totals. The reports
from the conference were correct but in getting them
posted the CGNT had misplaced one complete match
causing the CGNT to report incorrect totals which
reflected a different set of challengers to
Stephanie Pribonic as the season was winding down.
We had
reported that this final match would contain a
battle for the
individual
championship between Stephanie and Kendra Dalton
when it should have been between Stephanie and the
Heritage player Rhea Bhatia.
The CGNT had
reported that Miss Dalton and Miss Pribonic were
separated by just one stroke when in actuality they
were separated by 13 strokes. In the real race -
which was not as close as described by the CGNT
between Dalton and Pribonic, - between Pribonic and
Bhatia showed a five stroke spread. We ask everyone
concerned for your forgiveness and assure you that
through this lesson we have learned to not only
check but double check our own accuracy on all
submissions. With that said this season was still an
exciting one to watch. Match

may be different from the conference totals as the

Dalton's
38 Leads the Heritage Huskies to First
Conference Win |
|
|
RALEIGH, NC
– October 10, 2011 – TPC Wakefield Plantation –
The Wakefield Wolverines are in the coasting mode as
they wind down this season and heading to the
regional. At the TPC the Wolverines scored their
highest round of this season, a 134. This high score
gave the Heritage Huskies an opening and they took
it led by Kendra Dalton.
Dalton
carded her second consecutive round of 38 giving her
a third medalist medal for the season, In her last
match she share the medalist honors with Alli
Mossinghoff who also posted a 38 in the last event.
Dalton’s 38
along with Rhea Bhatia’s 42 and Kelly Dovel’s 49
gave the Huskies their second lowest round of this
season, a 129 that was five strokes lower than
conference leader Walkefield but no where near
enough to affect the huge lead that the Wolverines
have. Dalton’s back to back 38’s helped send her up
the ladder to where she is now in second place only
one stroke behind the leader Pribonic.
One of the
leading causes of Wake- field’s loss was their
No.1, Stephanie Pribonic, who had her worst round of
the season. Everybody is entitled to a day off but
at this juncture of the season is no place for
hiccups that might carry over into the regional.
Pribonic’s 46 was seven strokes over her YTD stroke
average but was not enough to damage her conference
lead. Yet is does put her lead in jeopardy as her
lead is down to one stroke over the Huskie’s Dalton
with one match to go.
Morgan Schultz
led the Wolverines with her right on the target 41
strokes. It appears that the success of Wakefield
can be accredited to their No.3 Carly Herndon.
Herndon, like Schultz was a very consistent golfer
this season and provided the scoring that fortifies
a team’s No. 1 and two. Herndon will be an integral
asset in the regional.
The habitual
third placer, the Sanderson Spartans, was there
again. The Spartans showed a lot of potential in
their first two matches of the season. Then their
scoring began to escalate on them and they were
never able to bring them back down. In their first
two matches of the season all three of their golfers
finished in the top 12 places averaging a score of
46 between them.
Two golfers
will be giving it their all at the Cap 8’s next
event. Dalton and Pribonic will provide some very
good golf to watch as they do battle for the
individual conference championship.<>

Randolph is headed
to the regional
with great
expectations
|
|
|
ASHEBORO, NC - October
11, 2011 - SW
Randolph's Coach Kelly
Knowles is excited about
her team. As the sesson
is winding down Coach
Knowles had this to say
about her team and
herself.
"This season has gone very well I believe. The girls are
improving each match and
gaining confidence with
every shot. They
are playing at the top
of their games going
into Regionals in a
week. I am looking
forward to seeing how
they do!"
"One
thing I have learned
over the past couple of
months when coaching
golf is that it is 90
percent mental and the
other10 percent is
skill. All of
these girls have the
skill but their mental
game is what often holds them back. I try to encourage them to take the shot they are
confident with and to
always believe in their
skill. If they
have a bad hole, they
just have to let it go
because the next hole is
a new one. I
admire their work ethic
on the course. My
job as a coach is to
help them focus
sometimes, but often to
remind them to just
relax."<>Back

When the going
gets tough the
tough get going |
|
|
BURLINGTON, NC –
October 10, 2011 –
Alamance CC – Just a
couple of matches ago
the Mid State 3A
Conference was all tied
up between Northern
Guilford and West
Alamance. It was
showdown time and
whoever blinked first
would find themselves on
the short end of the
stick.
In the first match after
the all square N.
Guilford rallied the
troops and won by
thirteen strokes
severely injuring the
hopes of W. Alamance but
there was an outside
chance the Warriors
could bounce back.
The Warriors did bounce,
or I should say bump
back, as the Warriors
won their match but only
by three strokes. Now
ten strokes down and
only two matches left,
which are not 18 hole
matches as the CGNT
thought they would be,
the Warriors needed to
go to guns, pull out all
of the stops dig deep
inside of themselves and
find what it takes to be
the victors in the next
match.
That match was today at
Alamance CC and the
Warriors’ could not pull
it out. Dockrill, the
lead Warrior had her
worst round of the
season while the rest of
her troops shot their
stroke averages.
Dockrill’s 42 with
Taylor Ross’s 39 and
Erin Pleasants’ 50 were
just not good enough.
Their team total of 130
was five strokes short
of victory. W. Alamance
needs fifteen strokes to
tie and sixteen to win
the Mid State 3A
Conference
Championship.
Coach Jones must have
pulled out all of his
inspirational notes to
get his Nighthawks to
rise to the occasion
after they posted their
highest team total in
their last match to come
over to Alamance CC and
post their third lowest
total of this season, a
125. The Nighthawks had
all three of their
players in the top six
with Taylor Penzer
taking the point with a
round of 40 while
Elizabeth Ewing was one
back of her leader and
the Nighthawks rearguard
came in with a 44.
Now the Nighthawks with
their 15 stroke margin
can relax and work on
their shortcomings in
preparation for the
regional being held at
Meadowlands Golf Club in
Winston-Salem.

the extra distance and captured the girls’ title in

The Battle
Continues
West Alamance Wins By Only 3 Strokes |
 |
|
|
BURLINGTON, NC – October 6, 2011 –
Indian Valley Golf Club –
The Mid-State 3A conference met a Indian Valley Golf
Club to see who wins out in the battle for the
conference championship between West Alamance and
Northern Guilford. Two matches age these two teams
were dead even and then Northern Guilford comes back
in their last meeting and pulls off the win by 13
strokes. As close as these two teams play each other
thirteen strokes would seem to put an end to this
chase to finish. Well West Alamance is not about to
lie down and die.
At Indian
Valley the West Alamance Warriors came back at the
hand of their No.1 Heather Dockrill, Dockrill had
one of her rare off days in their last meeting but
looked pretty good at Indian Valley where she posted
a two over par 37. Teammate Taylor Ross helped the
Warriors with her round of 42. The Warriors No.3,
Erin Pleasants, came in with a 50 for a team total
of 129. Regrettably this score was only three
strokes better than the Nighthawks of N. Guilford
and with two matches left on the schedule the
Warriors have got to make up ten strokes or better
if they want to win the conference championship.
The N. Guilford Nighthawks were led to the runner-up
slot by their No.1 Taylor Penzer who was aided in
this defense of their lead by Elizabeth Ewing.
Penzer shot a 41 and Ewing closed with a 46 which
for both of these golfers were higher than their
stroke average. The team total of 132 was completed
by Nicole Kascia who finished within her strokes
average with a 45.
Generally the last two matches
of the season are 18 hole events which will give W.
Alamance a better opportunity to come back.
Regardless, both teams will still have to make every
shot count as the season winds down.
The 3A Regional will be held for
these two teams at the Meadowlands Golf Club located
near by in Winston-Salem, NC on October 24th,
2011.

Northern
Guilford Regains the Lead in the Mid-State 3A |
|
|
GREENSBORO, NC – October 5, 2011 – Bryan Park Golf Club –
The Nighthawks of Northern Guilford took the fight to
Western Alamance as they were all square after their match.
In what will be an epic fight for the remainder of this
season the Nighthawks gave a warning of what is to come as
they posted their lowest round of the season in conference
play at Bryan Park. Not only was it the lowest round of the
season for Northern Guilford it was the lowest round carded
in the conference this season.
The
Nighthawks went on a tear lead by the No.1 Taylor Penzer
with a 38 that is good enough for the medalist honors, her
second this season. Sitting just one stroke behind Penzer
was Nighthawk Elizabeth Ewing with a 39. N. Guilford’s No.3,
Nicole Kasica, turned in her best performance of this season
with a 40. With this outstanding performance by N. Guilford
they go up 13 strokes over West Alamance with their round of
117 at Bryan Park.
So what happened to W. Alamance? The leading golfer in the
Mid-State 3A conference who had won four consecutive
medalist honors and West Alamance’s No.1 did not bring her
“A” game to Bryan Park. Heather Dockrill had been on a roll
all season long but found a rough patch at Bryan
Park recording her highest round of the season, a 40.
Dockrill’s season long wingman, Taylor Ross fought the good
fight bringing in a solid 39, her third best round of the
season. Rounding out the Warriors of West Alamance total of
130 was Erin Pleasants with a 51.
McMichael who had been playing back in the rear all season
seems to have stepped up their game as this season is
drawing to an end. Last week they scored their best team
total of the season and came within two strokes of doing it
again. McMichael’s 139 gave them their best finish thus far
this season, third place, most because of Courtney Holt who
also had her best round this season. Holt’s 40 along with
Julia Shelton’s 45 made McMichael’s No.3 score really count.
Macey Ferguson came in with a 54 to secure McMichael’s third
place finish.
Mid-State 3A has another match on heels of this one which we
will report on the outcome of it over the weekend. Stay
tuned.

The Wakefield
Wolverines Claim Win Number Five
|
|
|
DURHAM, NC – October
4, 2011 – Falls Village
Golf Club – The Cap
8 4A Conference took
their conference over to
Durham to play Falls
Village. With only two
matches after Falls
Village the certainty of
the Wakefield Wolverines
will claim the
conference championship.
At Falls Village the
Wolverines posted their
highest team total of
this season, a 129. The
129 was good enough to
keep their string of
consecutive victories in
tact. Stephanie Pribonic
led the Wolverines with
a fine round of three
over par though it was
not low enough to win
her a third medalist
honor.
|

Kendra Dalton |
The medalist honor won
at Falls Village was
shared between
Heritage’s Kendra Dalton
and Lees Road’s Alli
Mossinghoff. Both
golfers shot a two over
par round of 38. This
was Dalton’s second
medalist medal this
season.
Dalton’s 38 helped her
Heritage Huskies to win
the runner-up spot at
Falls Village. Rhea
Bhatia, also an owner of
a medalist title this
season for the Huskies,
shot a round of 40. This
has been the problem for
the Huskies this season.
Both Dalton and Bhatia
are second and third
behind Pribonic in the
stroke average
department. The Huskies
just do not have a No.3
to help them out. |

Alli Mossinghoff |
Wakefields
Pribonic has been the
stalwart for the
Wolverines this season.
Pribonic is carrying a
37 stroke average and
that is without throwing
out her high round.
Helping Pribonic out is
Morgan Schultz, though
she is not under a 40
stroke average, she is a
very consistent golfer.
The Wolverines No.3 is
Carly Herndon. Herndon
can be the lynchpin to
help get the Wolverines
under that magical
number of 120 which they
will need if they get to
the state playoffs.
The claimant of the
third spot at Falls
Village was the Spartans
of Sanderson High.
Savannah Gowarty was
again the lead Spartan
with a round of 43.
The number of holes left
to play this season is
dwindling quickly and
the regional is just
around the corner with
the state playoffs just
four weeks off.

Northern Guilford
Gets It All Back
To Even |
|
|
REIDSVILLE, NC -
September 29, 2011 –
Plantation Golf and Swim
Club – The Northern
Guilford Nighthawks seem
to be back on track with
their second win in a
row. The most noticeable
improvement is that
Taylor Penzer has got
her game back into the
thirties. This is very
important since both the
Nighthawks and the
Warriors of Western
Alamance are going head
to head every week with
only few strokes of
difference between them.
This time the Nighthawks
came out on top 122 to
126 for the Warrior.
Leading the way for the
Nighthawks was Taylor
Penzer with a 39, the
same score that team
mate Elizabeth Ewing
came in with. Nighthawks
Nicole Kasica and Bryce
Huntoon were fighting it
out to see which one
would add their score to
the team total. Kasica
won out by one stroke
with a 44.
The
indomitable
Heather Dockrill
continues her
quest to be
crowned Mid State
3A conference
champion. Dockrill,
with a one over
par 37, was
crowned for her
fourth medalist
honors with her
one over par
round. Warrior
Taylor Ross came
in with three
strokes off of
Dockrill’s.
Warrior Erin
Pleasants’ score
of 49 completed
the team total of
126 and the
runner-up title.
Now with four matches in
the books the remaining
four matches will be
knock down drag out
affairs as both Northern
Guilford and Western
Alamance are all square
– deadlocked at 493
strokes each. Stay tuned
as this will come down
to how their No.3’s will
do in each of the
remaining four matches.
Williams took the third
spot with a round of 133
led by Allie Vaughn with
a 39.

displaced the West
Alamance Warriors from
their winning streak of

Nighthawks were led to

Wakefield Notches
No. 4 |
|
|
RALEIGH, NC
– September 27, 2011 – Wilmar Golf Club – With a
team stroke average of 123 the Wakefield Wolverines
may make a clean sweep of their schedule this
season. Their lead Wolverine, Stephanie Pribonic, is
playing some serious golf. Her 35.33 stroke average
places her at the top of the list of Cap 8 golfers.
Season to date, in the top five there are two
Wolverines, Pribonic and Schultz. All of this bodes
well for the Wolverines as they head into the last
three weeks before the regional.
 |
|
Stephanie Pribonic |
 |
|
Morgan
Schultz |
|
Pribonic
claimed her third medalist honors at Wilmar. The
Wolverines matched their low round of the season at
121. Morgan Schultz came in with a 39 and the
Wolverines No. 3, Carly Herndon came in with a 47.
Surprising
everyone at Wilmar was Broughton. Broughton has
played for the number four spot each of the last
three matches but this time someone lit a match to
them.
Broughton came
in second behind Wakefield with a team round of 126,
their best so far this season; their best by
thirteen strokes. Broughton’s Katie Brown came in
with a 39, Rachel Lea with a 43 and Mackenzie
Fulford completed the total with a 44. This was
indeed a good week for the Broughton duffers.
Sanderson High
prevented Heritage, who really gave Wakefield a run
for their money last week, from taking the third
spot. Sanderson had a great round this week as well
carding their best team score of the season.
Sanderson came in eight strokes better than their
stroke average to claim the number three spot.

The Warriors of Western Alamance
duplicates last week's score and
victory
Heather Dockrill wins medalist with a two under
par round of 34 |
|
|
Eden, NC – September 26, 2011 – Oak Hills
Golf and Events Ctr. – The
Warriors of Western Alamance High stood firm in their
determination to be the team to beat in the Mid-State 3A
conference.
The lead Warrior, Heather Dockrill, is taking up where she
left off last season. By the end of 2010 Dockrill amassed a
stroke average of 38.90. In the Warriors win last week
Dockrill shared the medalist honors with a two over par
round of 37. This week she shares the medalist honors with
no one with her two under par round of 34. This young lady
has really been working on her game over the summer.
Aiding Dockrill in the Warrior win with a duplicate score
from last week’s match of 118 was Taylor Ross with a one
over par round of 37 and Erin Pleasants with a round of 47.
Maddie Flemming shot a 58.
Last week Williams edged out Northern Guilford by one stroke
to take the runner-up title but not this week as the
Nighthawks of Northern Guilford took the runner-up title
with a comfortable eight stroke margin.
Last week Williams edged out Northern Guilford by one stroke
to take the runner-up title but not this week as the
Nighthawks of Northern Guilford took the runner-up title
with a comfortable eight stroke margin.
The outcome for the Nighthawks might have been a little
different had not their No.1, Taylor Penzer, have an
uncommon off day. Penzer carded a six over par round of 42.
In her place the Nighthawk’s No. 2 Elizabeth Ewing stepped
up with a three over par round of 39. To finish out the
Nighthawks team total of 122 was the round shot by Nicole
Kascia, a 41.
The Lady Bulldogs of Williams was led by Allie Vaughn with a
round of 39, three over par. Mary Kirkman and Catherine Deal
added 44 and 47 respectively to the team total of 130 for a
third place finish.
The Warriors are looking like they will be
tough to beat this season but to do so they will have to
keep their mind on their business as Northern Guilford and
Williams have the where with all to do them in. The
Mid-State 3A conference is one of the hottest conferences
thus far this season.

Wakefield Nails Down Wins No. 2 &
3 |
|
|
WAKE
FOREST, NC - September 20, 2011 - Heritage Golf Club
- The Wakefield Wolverines have kicked off the
2011 season with a bang. Right out of the gate they
have won their second consecutive match at the
Heritage Golf Club in Wake Forest, NC, but it was
now walk in the park. The Wolverines had to claw
their way to this victory as the Heritage Huskies
was snapping at the Wolverines hind legs all the way
to the clubhouse.
How tough was
it, the top two golfers who shared in the medalist
honors were Huskies Rhea Bhatia and Kendra Dalton
with a matching pair of 35's. Last week's medalist
Wolverine Stephanie Pribonic was aided in the
Wolverine’s one stroke victory by two of her wingmen
that had improved rounds over last week’s round.
Morgan Shultz
improved her game by four strokes and Carly Herndon
recorded a two stroke improvement. This Wolverine
victory can surely be attributed to the improved
rounds of both of these ladies.
The pair of
Huskies medalists were aided in their near victory
over an improving Wolverine team by Kelly Dovel who
herself carded a much improved round over her
previous weeks match. Dovel came in nine strokes
better than last week.
With all of
this improving play by the numbers two and threes
the Cap Eight 4A Conference is set to be a house
afire every week.
Sanderson came
in as the third place finisher at Heritage Golf
Club.
The Cap Eight
4A Conference held their second match of this week
at famed Lonnie Poole golf course at NCSU and based
on the scoring the Lonnie Poole
course may have been a bit more
demanding than the other tracts that the
Cap Eight conference has played that is,
for every team but the Walkefield
Wolverines.
The
Wolverines came off of Lonnie Poole with
their third consecutive victory with a
score of 124, their average team total
for their first two matches. Wakefield
won this match over their arch rival the
Heritage Huskies by thirteen strokes.
Head Wolverine Stephanie Pribonic earned
her second medalist medal with a round
of 38. Adding to the team total of 124
for the Wolverines was Morgan Schultz
with a 39 and Carly Herndon with a 47.
The
real fight at this match was for the
number two slot between the Heritage
Huskies and the Spartans of Sanderson
High. Heritage’s Bhatia and Dalton were
having an off day which allowed the
Spartans to challenge the Huskies. And
challenge them they did.
The
Spartans came within one stroke of
upsetting the Huskies who were lead by
Savannah Gowarty, Najah Owens and
Jessica Perez.
