Concord High 2013 SPC Champions

The 2013 SPC Regular Season Champion was to be decided this afternoon at The Club at Irish Creek.  Going into this match Concord High and JM Robinson were the clear leaders for the top spot, but Cox Mill and Hickory Ridge were not about to let this be an easy ending.  Cox Mill came out as a team and had their best match of the season.  Led by senior Austin Albers’ 37 (his best match of his 4-year career at Cox Mill) with Justin Westveer’s 39, Dominic Andrew’s 40 and Jake Phillps’ 42, Cox Mill won the final match with a total 158.  This first place finish secures third place in the conference team race and a spot at the State Regional Tournament.  Four strokes back at 162 was Hickory Ridge.  Sophomore Davis Kiger again led the Hickory Ridge team and was the Match Medalist with a solid 36.  Contributing to Hickory Ridge’s lowest season score were Smit Savani 41, Brody Davis 42 and Brendan Galloway 43.  Hickory Ridge finished fourth in the conference and will also be headed to the regional tournament.  Despite today’s great effort by Cox Mill and Hickory Ridge, the battle for the top spot was still between Concord and JM Robinson.

The winner of the 2013 SPC Regular Season Championship is Concord High.  Today’s match total of 165 and a third place finish was enough to secure the championship.  This makes them the top seed for the April 29th conference tournament and also qualifies them for the State Regional Tournament.  Freshman Walker Cress was again the team low with a 38.  This keeps him in the lead for the individual title with the two nines of the conference tournament left to decide that battle.  The Concord team includes Marshall Cromer (44), Maverick Chunn (DNP), John Eury (47), Blain Laszlo (43), Seth Roberts (40), Ethan Wilder (50), Zayne Wilson (DNP) and Bain Wright (DNP).  Concord has led the team battle for most of the season winning four of the eight matches with two seconds and two thirds.  Taking second was the very strong JM Robinson team.  Senior AT Cashwell led the team again today with a 39 as he continues to battle for the individual title.  The JM Robinson team includes Trent Jones (43), Chris Johnson (44), Zack Boatwright (42), Brooks Jones (DNP), Amos Capps Jr. (43), Josh Iamarsh (DNP), Alex Jones (47), and Travis Chumley (DNP).  Over the season, JM Robinson won three matches, three seconds and two fourths.

The battle for the individual title is still too close to call.  Each of the top four teams has a player in this battle.  Currently, Concord’s Walker Cress is in first place.  Walker’s season total 262 is two strokes ahead of Hickory Ridge’s Davis Kiger and JM Robinson’s AT Cashwell.  In fourth place, another stroke back, is the 2012 MVP from Cox Mill, Justin Westveer.  These four will continue to fight for the top spot at the conference tournament, which will count as the final two nine-hole matches in the race for the MVP.
