At the 08
regional Kell
as a team
failed to
advance to the
state but
three of their
players
qualified as
individuals.
They were
Allison Emrey,
Lauren Steele
and Elisha
Zhang. At the
state Allison
Emrey
exhibited a
far more
improved
player than
just 12 months
before.
Over those 12
months Emrey
took five
strokes off of
her stroke
average. In
her first
state
tournament
Emrey recorded
a two day
total of 151
which was good
enough to win
her the
medalist
honors and the
title of NC 4A
State
Champion.
Steele
finished tied
for 51st
and Zhang
finished 40th.
In two short
years Kell was
able to put
together a
program that
was turning
out solid
performers and
the good thing
was that those
solid players
were going to
be around for
a couple of
more season.
With such
momentum and
success in
such a short
time Kell was
looking for
even bigger
and better
accomplishments
in 2009 and
boy did they.
Kell only
played in 34
matches in 09
but they won
every one of
them but one.
Of their seven
conference
matches they
went seven and
zip earning
their first
Conference
Champ title
which gave
Kell the extra
added push to
conquer the
regional.
Of the 15
teams at the
regional Kell
once again
flexed their
muscles that
had been
increasing
with every
past victory.
When day was
over at Cedar
Rock Kell was
crowned the
regional champ
and Emrey the
medalist. Now
the engines of
each of those
players were
fully stoked
and ready as a
team for their
first team
entry into the
state
championship.
So in three
short years
the Ardrey
Kell golf team
was at their
first state
playoffs.
Conventional
wisdom,
phooey! Where
there is a
will there is
always a way.
Thirteen teams
showed up for
the challenge
at Fox Fire in
Pinehurst.
With cool and
on and off
rain the two
day event
ended with
Kell earning
runner-up to
Athens Drive.
Emrey also
earned a tie
for runner-up
at her second
state
championship,
all in all a
very good
year.

This is the
final year for
Emrey and
Zhang but not
to worry they
have two more
ready to
assume the
leadership
role left
vacant by
these two fine
golfers as
evidenced by
their play
thus far in
2010.
Currently Kell
is undefeated
in their
conference
play and in
doing so have
set some new
state team and
individual
records. Their
team stroke
average has
fallen all the
way down to
111. This team
has all the
marks of a
State
Championship
win. They have
the talent and
the winning
tradition that
can take them
all the way.
